Haleiwa unkind to local surfers as Triple Crown officially under way

Heff / WSL

American Cam Richards put on an impressive air show in his opening-round win at the Hawaiian Pro on Tuesday in Haleiwa. The Triple Crown of Surfing got going, but many of Hawaii’s best were knocked out in round one. Kauai’s Kaimana Jaquias was able to survive with a second-place result in his first heat.

Something about Haleiwa just hasn’t gone well for Hawaii surfers over the past few years. The opening event for the Triple Crown is typically a chance for all the local talent to show the best in the world that there is more than just the contest circuit.
